Job Title:                                Preschool Assistant

Based At:                               Checkendon Village Hall

Responsible To:                   Senior Supervisor

Job description:            To work as a key person as part of the preschool team under the direction of the senior supervisor and deputy supervisor to provide safe, high quality education and care for young children. To maintain a stimulating and enjoyable environment.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To assist with ensuring that the pre-school provides a safe, caring, stimulating educational environment, both indoors and outdoors, at every session
  • To assist in the preparation of an appropriate play based Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum that enables children to make individual progress
  • To provide a high standard of care and education is provided and that Ofsted requirements are met at all times
  • To work with other professionals in the local area for the benefit of children and families

MAIN DUTIES:

  1. To assist with the planning of the curriculum
  2. To act as a key person to a small group of children, liaising closely with parents/carers and ensuring each child’s needs are recognised and met
  3. To advise the preschool leader of any concerns e.g. over children, child protection, parents/carers or safety of the equipment, preserving confidentiality as necessary
  4. To be aware of any special needs a child may have and to familiarise oneself with relevant play and learning plans
  5. To teach children, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulation
  6. To attend staff meetings
  7. To attend in-service training course and meetings as required
  8. To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is acquired as part of the job.
  9. To up to date with current good practice
  10. To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the preschool leader in accordance with the preschool business plan/ objectives

PRE-SCHOOL SESSION MANAGEMENT:

 

  1. To ensure appropriate equipment and materials are set up before the children arrive, both indoors and outdoors, and are tidied away at the end of every session and the room left clean.
  2. To ensure all activities, equipment and other resources are presented attractively with the support of appropriate books.
  3. To ensure that children are properly supervised at all times both indoors and outdoors and that appropriate adult child ratios are maintained at all times.
  4. To ensure all health, hygiene and safety issues are addressed.

WORKING WITH PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS:

  1. To communicate with parents in a positive, sensitive and constructive manner.
  2. To actively promote the Pre School within the wider community through, for example, local newsletters and papers.

MANAGEMENT / ADMINISTRATION:

  1. Be aware of, and act in accordance with, current legislation, policy and procedures.
  2. To monitor expendable materials and equipment generally and ensure that orders are placed in a timely manner.

COMMITTEE:

  1. You are welcome to meet with the committee at least monthly or as otherwise agreed in order to monitor progress and identify changing priorities e.g. session numbers, adult/child ratios, fundraising, feedback from all relevant parties etc.

GENERAL:

  1. To continually evaluate and reflect on your own practice. To keep up-to-date with the latest ideas and developments in the early years field through attending PLA and other early years meetings and training courses and reading relevant publications. To encourage and support staff members and volunteers in doing the same.

 GENERAL DETAILS:            

  • Working hours: 0700 to 1300 – Monday to Friday but possibly some afternoons dependent on child numbers.
  • Salary: Living Wage per hour
  • Contract: Fixed contract till end of Summer Term, July 2018. This will be reviewed as part of the appraisal process in June; however, you will be on four week notice period from either party.
  • Qualifications:

Essential: NVQ Level 2 Childcare

Desirable: NVQ Level 3 or above. Paedeatric First Aid Certificate. Able to speak another language.

General and Special Knowledge

Essential: Experience of Early Years Foundation stage and Ofsted regulations, demonstrate an up to date knowledge of current thinking in developments in early years.

Desirable:  Up to date with current child safety and safeguarding legislation.

  • DBS:the post requires an up to date DBS certificate to be provided at the interview
  • Attitude:positive approach to gaining further qualifications if necessary. Positive and nurturing approach to both parents, staff and children.
