Friday 30.06 RESERVE Sports Day
Friday 14.07 Last day of 2017 school term.  Summer holidays begin before returning to Pre-School in September.

Checkendon Village Hall will be a Polling Station on the following date:

Thursday 8th June

Pre-School will be closed on the above date.

You will not be charged.  If your child usually attends a Thursday session and is funded then you may use those hours on an alternative day.  Please speak to Nina or Liz if you think this may apply to you.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.

Now that the Primary School choice has been determined it is an important aspect of school preparation to be able to undress and dress at a pretty speedy rate!  This, as in so many areas, is simply to enable the children to move on to the next art of their day promptly and efficiently.

Please bring shorts and a t-shirt in a named carrier bag.  If we may keep them here it would be most handy.  PLEASE NAME THE CLOTHES.

If we may keep the P.E kit here then it enables us to add active sessions throughout the week so that all the children are included.

**  WEEKLY TESCO CHARITABLE FOOD DONATION **

As many of you will be aware, as a charitable organisation, Checkendon Pre-School CIO are able to receive a weekly donation of foodstuffs from Tesco in Henley-on-Thames.  The team at Tesco are also incredibly generous with non-food donations such as baby wipes and toys. With regards to this, please see below for a request from our committee:

25 May 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

As a Charity run preschool we are lucky enough to be able to obtain free food every week from Tesco’s in Henley.

At the moment, the food is collected by Nina with the help of the committee on occasion.

All the children benefit from lovely fresh snacks every day and for us to continue to keep this relationship with Tesco’s we are asking for parents to volunteer to collect the food one Sunday every term.

We generally don’t ask parents to volunteer unless it’s for fundraising events, however, with Nina leaving we would like to ask for parents to help us so that we can continue with this lovely benefit.

A list of dates for collections after half term will be available in preschool. Please do sign up and an information sheet for collection will be provided.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards

Checkendon CIO Committee

Below are a couple of pictures of this weeks’ donation.

MATHs Focus Weeks.

Activities and focus has been on Maths this week.  The children have been using the resources to sort, match, order, count forwards (up) and backwards (down).

We have worked in pairs, small groups and one to one.  Maths language has been concentrated on and the children have been encouraged to really think about using clear, concise language in their descriptions of what they are doing.

The weather has helped determine our maths activities this week.  The water trays have been well and truly used for so many activities – floating and sinking experiments, pouring, arranging channels to enable water to pour and run effectively enough to fill a container at the end, filling and emptying varying sizes of cups and containers.

We have had super fun and have thoroughly enjoyed being able to enjoy the early summer sun whilst staying safe in the shade.

Painting to music with Liz was enormous fun.  What a joy for us to see the children so free and relaxed.  Liz’s choice of music was a bit ‘rocky’ so the children enjoyed hearing this and dancing along whilst painting!  This is one of our favourite activities – the freedom that adding music offers to the fluidity of movement is fantastic.

Each child has grown a small pot of cress. The process of preparation, planting, and monitoring the growth has been practised individually.  Some of the children have even taught the ladies the process – this was very interesting and really gave the children a sense of pride to be able to teach a lady!

The cress is being grown in various conditions.  We are observing the growth of the cress in the dark, with and without water, in the warm and cold as well as with all of the above.

One tray will be used with the homemade bread to make delicious sandwiches – just right for the summer season ahead of us!!

Little Chefs

This week we were lucky enough to be Little Chefs twice!  We made bread rolls to enjoy eating with the cress we have grown.  Adding a hard-boiled egg (from our Tesco donation) to these, made a delicious snack to take home and make egg and cress sandwiches with.  It was lovely to see so many of these appearing in lunchboxes through the week!

We will be cooking on the first week of next term and we are busy planning the Little Chef’s recipes for next term so watch this space……we will inform you on Monday 5th June if you are cooking that week.

MAYPOLE DANCING

On Friday 9th June we will be joining Checkendon Primary School in celebration of Ascension Day.

This takes the form of Maypole dancing!

The children who are joining Checkendon Primary School are invited to join in with the dancing and will be performing a short display.

If you do not attend Pre-School on a Friday and are joining Checkendon Primary School in September, you are most welcome to join us to dance: Jacob, Wills, Dexter, Thomas, Maisie, Ava, Sebby, Eric.

If any of the above children would like to dance with us please be at Pre-School on Friday at 2.15.  Parents are very welcome to spectate!  We will be back at Pre-School at around 3.00pm.

FACEBOOK PAGE

Checkendon Pre-School has a Facebook page.  We use this to remind everyone and advertise events, celebrations, themes, activities and items to bring in.

We do not put any photographs of children on the page, and we ask the same of all our Facebook friends.  It is purely as an extra information tool for our families at Pre-School.

Please do visit the page.

You will see a post which advertises our next big fundraiser – The Checkendon Run on Sunday 11th June. Please, please share this post with anyone and everyone! It is a really lovely event which celebrates a popular sporting hobby as well as the beautiful countryside that we are all lucky enough to enjoy so closely.

We are hopeful that with plenty of sharing going on, more runners will enter the 10k and raise funds for our Pre-School.

Thank you for sharing everyone!

Barnardo’s Big Toddle Event.

On Wednesday 21st June at 10.00am we will be participating in the annual ‘Big Toddle’ to raise funds for the children’s charity Barnardo’s.

We will be ‘toddling’ around the main field in the village, just next to where we hold Sports Day.

The theme of this year’s toddle is ‘COLOURS’ so we all need to dress as brightly and as colourfully as we can.  There will be stickers and balloons to add to the occasion.

All children who attend on a Wednesday will be joining in – with or without sponsors – but let’s aim to raise a lovely amount of money for this worthwhile cause.

If you do not attend on a Wednesday, of course you may join us but will need a grown-up to come along too!

We will send home a sponsor form – this is voluntary – if you wish to ask family and friends to sponsor your child for each lap of the field completed then we would be most grateful.

We will raise money for children who are less fortunate than ourselves and we hope that by taking part we can encourage the children to recognise that there are children who have and do far less than we are able to.

As an extra activity, I wonder if each child would be able to choose a toy or book that they have grown out of to donate to a Barnardo’s charity shop.

If we are all able to bring along one item on Wednesday 21st June then I will take them to our nearest Barnardo’s shop.

Thank you for your participation.

Everyone is welcome to join the Village Hall Committee’s fundraiser detailed below.

SUNCREAM

The weather has now definitely warmed up!  So, suncream and sunhats are a must at Pre-School.

Each child needs to have a bottle of suncream here – with their name clearly written on the bottle/tube.

Please ensure that you do provide a suitable cream.  It is unfair for anyone to have to share this expensive necessity and we are unable to provide a universal ‘suitable for all skin types’ cream.

Please sign the sheet to give us permission to apply the cream – it is on the wall in the entrance hall.

We do, however, have a selection of sunhats here.  This enables the children to pick a hat before going outside from the basket – so if you forget a hat, don’t worry!!

PURPLE COMMUNICATION DIARIES

Please try to regularly bring your child’s purple communication diary to Pre-School – at least once a week if possible.

These are a vital tool for us to monitor children’s achievements and adventures from home and their life outside Pre-School.  We are then able to complete each individual’s learning profile and build up a full picture of their development.

Please do try to return them.  Thank you.

SHOW AND TELL

Any item deemed suitable for ‘Show and Tell’ is always a delight to see.  We will make time through the week for as much ‘Show and Tell’ as possible – whatever it is.

Show and Tell photographs and videos have been so interesting.  This involves the children in the use of technology and combines it with social interaction and communication.  Emailed photographs are always welcome as a ‘Show and Tell’ item.

Children do not need to bring a ‘Show and Tell’ item every day.  It is just as important to be the audience and ask questions – in fact that is just what is needed!

Stories are a great idea – we always enjoy reading a new book and sharing it with our friends.

If you have more than one pair of wellies here, please take home the pair that doesn’t fit – we only have a limited storage space.

Soft/indoor shoes must be worn at Pre-School and we will change in to boots for outdoor activities.

An extra layer in the form of a fleece or jumper is a good idea for indoors as the hall can be chilly sometimes.

Please ensure that your clothes bag is re-filled throughout the term, just in case…

PLEASE NAME ALL ITEMS THAT COME IN TO PRE-SCHOOL.

We would like the children to wear indoor shoes or slippers during Pre-School please.

Our carpets/rugs are becoming quite marked due to mud on shoes.

We also request that if parents have muddy boots on, please try to avoid the carpets in the main hall.  Thank you to the parents who have kindly removed muddy boots – very much appreciated.

**FEES AND PAYMENTS FOR EXTRAS**

We are nearing the end of the Spring term.

Please ensure that bills are fully paid by Friday 7th April.  This includes payments for extra sessions attended. Do check with Liz or Nina if you need to know if you have any outstanding payments.

Thank you.

LATE COLLECTIONS and EARLY DROP OFFS

We are aware that due to having to travel to Pre-School sometimes children may be collected after the end of the sessions- 11.30/12.30/3.30.

We require a ‘late pick up’ fee to be paid if you arrive past the end of the session.

The same fee applies if children are dropped earlier than the beginning of a session.  Our Breakfast Club begins at 7.30am, morning session 8.30am, lunch at 11.30am and afternoon at 12.30pm.

The Breakfast Club session begins at 7.30am – no earlier – due to the fact that we have the room to set up.

The fee is £1.25 for each 15 minutes or part of 15 minutes after the end of session.

So between 3.30 and 3.45 the fee is £1.25 but then increases to £2.50 between 3.45 and 4.00….

The late collection fee stands even if you have telephoned to inform us that you will be late.

Please pay cash on the day or as soon after as possible.

We do not like having to ask for this which is why we do ask you to be prompt in your collection.

 Thank you for your understanding.

END OF SUMMER TERM DATE

The last day of term before the summer holidays for Checkendon Pre-School CIO is Friday 14th July 2017.

We do close earlier than the Primary School due to the number of weeks for which we receive the Nursery Education Funding. We stay open for inset days due to the fact that we have a large number of children attending who do not have school attending siblings.

We appreciate that this is an earlier finishing date than the Primary School but we hope that with as much notice as we have given that plans can be made accordingly.

Kind regards,

Nina, Liz, Kelly, Harriet.

We have enjoyed dressing up and role play, using the ‘target’ carpets to play marbles, discovering the school field, painting, creating, counting, adding and subtracting, sorting, building, songs, stories and conversation.

We are looking forward to some exciting themes during the Summer term:

Under the main title of ‘Let’s Explore How’ we will find out and discover all sorts of interesting things:

  • How many ways can we paint?
  • How does a bicycle work?
  • How does a butterfly grow?
  • How can we use Maths every day?

As this week was Bike Week we have enjoyed seeing and using children’s bicycles, scooters and energy to complete laps, keep a tally of how many laps we can cycle, ride through water, play wheelie relay, learn about road safety and so much more.

Dave, the Lollipop Man joined us and showed us his bicycle as well as helped us to understand the importance of road safety. The children crossed the area using a giant zebra crossing that they had made as well as using traffic lights and Dave’s Lollipop.

The children are very good at showing an understanding of road safety, what the colours of a traffic light mean and the importance of using our ears as well as our eyes when riding bikes and scooters.

Thank you to Claire; Harry’s Mummy, who shared her bicycle with us – we loved this as it has a trailer on the back to ride in!

We drew very detailed pencil drawings of Nina’s bicycle too.  We really looked at all the different parts of the bicycle and were able to draw some very exact pictures.

Next week is PAINTING WEEK

During Painting week we will be using a variety of tools to paint with.  Maybe things we have never used before such as feathers……we will be producing a number of pictures and paint effects to take home so please clear a space on the fridge!

We do use maths and maths language every day during Pre-School and at home.  We want to investigate how, where and when this happens – especially the times that we don’t realise we are being mathematical!

P.E

Starting next week (Wednesday 3rd May) we would like all children attending to bring with them change of clothes for P.E.

Little Chefs

On Tuesday 9th May the Little Chefs will be making delicious “Marmite Wheelies”.

They will be making their own pastry then spreading it with a layer of marmite before rolling it up to make a wheel before popping their creations into the oven to cook.

The following children will be cooking next week and will need to bring a lidded container to take their wheelies home in:

CLIO   JUDE   ERIC   AUSTIN E   AVA    JACOB

ALEXANDER    LOLA    LUNA

Another Coffee Shop…….

We are hosting our second Coffee Shop on Saturday 20 May in Checkendon Village Hall.

If you are able and willing to make a cake for us to serve, please kindly bring it along just before the 20th for us to share on the day.

Everyone is most welcome to come along and enjoy some fresh cake, coffee, tea, conversation and chat with villagers and friends.  There will be a children’s play area along with drinks and biscuits for them to enjoy too.

Last time it was lovely to see many of our local families popping in for drinks and cakes – and we certainly had some delicious, fresh, homemade cakes, thanks to all of you!

We hope to see you then and thank you in advance for any contributions towards the cake table.

Barnardo’s Big Toddle Event.

On Wednesday 21st June at 10.00am we will be participating in the annual ‘Big Toddle’ to raise funds for the children’s charity Barnardo’s.

SUNCREAM

As the weather warms up – Dave told me it is on the cards! – please bring a bottle of suncream to Pre-School.  It must be named clearly (just write on a plaster!)

We will ask you to sign a form as we do need permission to apply the suncream throughout the day as necessary.

PURPLE COMMUNICATION DIARIES

Please try to regularly bring your child’s purple communication diary to Pre-School – at least once a week if possible.

As the weather warms up, please remember to bring a NAMED suncream with you.

We will ask you to sign a form – giving us permission to apply as necessary but we do ask you to do the first application of the day at home and we will top up as necessary.

If the suncream can stay here with us then we know that each child has some.

Please pay cash on the day or as soon after as possible.

We do not like having to ask for this which is why we do ask you to be prompt in your collection.

Thank you for your understanding.

Two of our Parents and Committee members would like you to spare a couple of minutes to complete a survey about the playground in the village.

Please see below and if you are able to complete the survey everyone involved would be most grateful.   Thank you.

I need to ask for 2 minutes of your time to fill in a survey please. Alexandra West and I are leading a bid to South Oxfordshire county council to secure funding to develop the Checkendon village playground. We want to put in more varied equipment for school age children, provide a dedicated toddler area and make the playground accessible to disabled users. The Parish Council is supportive of the project and we have agreement that the footprint of the playground could be extended out towards the pavement, thus almost doubling the useable space. All the new equipment would be wooden, in keeping with the look of the current facility and we want to create a new picnic area nearer the main playing field.

We think this is a really exciting opportunity to provide a first class facility in the village. We have spoken to a number of local people and everyone has been supportive of our ideas. However, as part of the grant application we have to show that we have done a formal consultation process with the local community. So we have put together this 10 question survey. Please can you fill it in? It should only take 2 minutes of your time.

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GVJ3S23

Please can you also forward this email to any other local parents that you know use the playground, the more responses we get the better and I do not have that many email addresses.

Thank you in advance for your help, and please let me know if you have any questions. We welcome input from anyone that has opinions on this as it will be a community facility so we want everyone to be pleased with it.

Best wishes

Charlotte and Alexandra.

Tuesday 17th April                       1st day of Summer term

Friday 14th July                            Last day of Summer term – Summer holiday

This week we have……

…continued completing our display boards which consist of snow and cold environment, opposites (animals which live in hot and cold climates), dinosaurs, a rainbow and Chinese New Year.

This week we learned how to write our names in Chinese – they are on display on a board with our giant rooster.

We have seen a huge selection of ‘opposites’ for Show and Tell this week – well done everyone.  This shows that you have really worked with us at home to think about what we are discovering here at Pre-School.

Thank you Jo (Hal’s Nanny) for singing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ with us – in Chinese.  She also sang ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ and taught us simple words.   Using our microphones we recorded Jo so that we can listen to her singing and try to sing too!  It was lovely to listen to Jo as she speaks Mandarin so beautifully.  Thank you.

Sebby proudly recited the numbers 1-10 in Japanese too!  Well done Sebby!

The children are really making wonderful achievments – whether it is a development in self-confidence, writing words from memory, using new vocabulary, creating beautiful pieces of artwork, building friendships and displaying personalities that work so well together in the group.

We are making a “Wow” board where we will be able to display these achievments in written form or with their artwork or photos.

The Little Chefs produced delicious Pancake Rolls this week in celebration of Chinese New Year.

We are looking forward to continuing with our display boards next week: Friends and Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Easter and Spring.

Next week ‘Friendship Week’.  We will be taking the upcoming celebration Valentine’s Day and spreading the love at Pre-School!!

The children will make each other cards, share their thoughts and we will be playing group games, activities in pairs and so much more.

SHOW AND TELL

Show and Tell photographs and videos have been so interesting.  This involves the children in the use of technology and combines it with social interaction and communication.

Please do try to bring a Show and Tell item that is relevant to the theme – this really brings our themes to life and makes them even more understandable.

Children do not need to bring a ‘Show and Tell’ item every day.  It is just as important to be the audience and ask questions – in fact that is just what is needed!

Stories are a great idea – we always enjoy reading a new book and sharing it with our friends.

LITTLE CHEFS

On Tuesday 7th February ALL the children in attendance will be cooking.

We will be working together to make a ‘Friendship Cake’ in celebration of Friendship week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

You do not need to contribute ingredients or bring anyting to take it home in – we will wrap it for you.

PAPER

If you have any old rolls of wallpaper hidden away we would be able to use it here at Pre-School.  It is perfect for huge drawings and paintings – a great way to introduce mark-making to the children as they can use large physical movements.

WARM CLOTHING

The weather is very cold.  Please remember wellies, warm coats and gloves/mittens for the children.

   **** “Saturday Coffee Shop” ****

We are hosting a coffee shop on Saturday 4th March 10am-12noon in Checkendon Village Hall.

There will be homemade cakes, tea, coffee and soft drinks for everyone to enjoy.

All our friends and neighbours are welcome – we thought it would be lovely to introduce a friendly, inviting, sociable event to which everyone may come along and relax in the company of those who we may not chat to so often but simply pass by.  Who can resist a bit of a gossip over tea and cake?!

Or a nice hot drink and piece of cake after walking the dog….before a bracing walk….or an amble along the footpaths with the family….

Whatever the reason – come along and enjoy some company!

The hall has free parking and plenty of space indoors and the cakes will be delicious!

Come along between 10 and 12 on the 4th March and hopefully this will be the first of many.

Nina, Liz , Kelly, Harriet.

We have been busy this week………………

Everyone is looking forward to Chinese New year – Year of the Rooster.  We are being taught some Chinese words and songs this year by Jo, Hal’s Nanny and we will taste delicious festive foods for snack.  The Little Chefs will also be making tasty Chinese treats.

The hall is beginning to look brighter with the children’s work on the display boards.  The examples of mark-making and writing are just wonderful and we are all rightfully proud of each individual’s achievement.

French with Kelly returned this week – we are learning the songs “Incey Wincey Spider” and “Two Little Dickie Birds”.

Little Chefs made “Iceberg Meringues” with a fruity topping.  They were, we have been told, absolutely delicious!

Next week the Little Chefs will be celebrating Chinese New Year with their cooking.

We are looking forward to this term as the weather brightens and the mornings are lighter. We are planning lots of learning opportunities and creative activities for everyone to enjoy.

We have enjoyed a range of number games this week.  Using visual resources such as monkeys and large, mirrored numbers we have played games that involve adding and subtracting to make larger and smaller numbers.  We have practised order and sorting through activities and games. Counting forwards and backwards/up and down is a daily activity.  By using maths language and by using maths in practical situations, the children learn quickly and effectively.

We have practised our letter formation this week.  Letter recognition and sound identification is improving rapidly as the children are including this in everyday language and conversations with the staff.

We are celebrating Chinese New Year next week – the year of the Rooster – and will be completing our giant rooster as well as practising some Chinese writing and making decorations.

MODELLING BOXES

We would like to build and construct models using a variety of small boxes.  When sorting the recycling, please make a small collection of boxes suitable for the children to make models with.  Please bring your boxes in a carrier bag – no boxes larger than a cereal box please.  Thank you.

PLEASE BRING NEXT WEEK….

“Opposites” – Liz would like to continue recognition of opposites next week.  Please bring ‘opposite’ items in:  large/small   rough/smooth  hard/soft……

Items will be used for observation and handling to enable the children to learn in a physical way.  Please name everything!

“Anything Chinese” – in celebration of Chinese New Year, please bring anything that you may have to help the children visualise the topic.

And, yes we have already had the suggestion of bringing lunch!!!!!

LITTLE CHEFS

Next week’s chefs are:

CLIO.  JUDE.  ERIC.  AUSTIN.  AVA.  JACOB.  ALEXANDER.  LOLA.

Little Chefs will be making CHINESE PANCAKE ROLLS

Please bring with you a suitable filling (carrot, beansprouts, pepper…..) to chop and fill the pancakes with.  Little Chefs will be making the pancakes and then chopping the fillings to construct the pancake rolls.

Remember a suitable, lidded storage container to take the pancake rolls home in.

FACEBOOK PAGE

Many of you may be aware that Checkendon Pre-School has a Facebook page.  We use this to remind and inform our families of events that we are planning or themes we are covering and much more.

The page will not ever have photos of the Pre-School children on it.

The admin team would like to inform everyone that the page is for information only and must not be used to advertise private businesses.

If you wish to advertise your own or friend’s business ventures, we are happy to do this via the wallets or posters on the noticeboards if they are deemed suitable.

Any posts added to the Checkendon Pre-School facebook page which are not deemed suitable will be removed.

Does anyone have a liquidizer or food processor that is sitting unused and unloved?  If so, we would be very grateful to have one here.  We are being given so much fruit by Tesco and we would like to whizz it up and freeze to enable us to make treats at a later date.  We are thinking of ice lollies, smoothies, sauces etc.

Thank you in advance if you are able to help.

Snack

As you may know, we have joined the Fairshare scheme in conjunction with the Henley branch of Tesco.

This means that we collect a weekly donation of bakery, chilled and fresh goods from Tesco for the children to consume throughout the week.

Due to the wonderful amount and variety that we do collect, at this present time we would like you to cease your contributions to the snack bowl.  We are so lucky to receive all the food items from Tesco and we hope that this may continue for a long time but it does mean that we have so much food!!

Thank you for your contributions to the snack bowl.  Your help has always been appreciated by us all.

Spare Clothes

Please ensure that your child has at least one whole outfit of spare clothes in the bag that Checkendon Pre-School has provided.  We use our own bags to free up some space in the cloakroom area which we know is rather limited.

CAR PARK

We are fully aware that the parking situation in the village hall is far from ideal.

As Pre-School families and, therefore users of the village hall, the car park is yours primarily to park in.  The disabled space is used by a Primary School parent who needs to manoeuvre a wheelchair to and from school.

No-one else from the Primary School should be parking in the car park, but monitoring and controlling the situation is virtually impossible without causing negativity.  We clearly do not want to do this so we have become very accepting of the situation.

I can only apologise for this and have taken steps this week to alert the Primary School again to the problem.  The school is usually supportive – unfortunately it’s the parents who choose to ignore the situation.

The Primary School are lucky to have Dave to assist in safe crossings of the road so there really is no excuse for parking in our car park.

I have written and displayed notices for the Primary School parents to clearly see and have also made a request to the Head Teacher that the notice is emailed to each family to ensure awareness.

On the other hand, please ensure that you do keep your own children safe in the car park.  Too often we observe children on one side of the parking area and parents on the other. Children are the Parent/Carers responsibility in the car park and we cannot be held responsible for any accidents caused.

Cars enter the car park at quite a speed sometimes and we do not wish for any harm to be caused.

I have requested that the Primary School cars are parked along the road or in the car park opposite (the new one that has been constructed).

We continue to monitor the situation and hope that there are improvements in this area.

Last day of term/school year – Pre-School closed for the summer holidays.

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN LEARNING THIS WEEK?

Firstly, welcome back everyone and Happy New Year.  We all hope you enjoyed the Christmas celebrations and are looking forward to the year ahead.

We have returned to welcome new friends and we look forward to introducing them to each other.

Our themes this year are going to be led by display boards and ideas from the children.  We are planning to use the boards around the hall to display the children’s artwork and writing which will stem from items they bring for Show and Tell, discussions we have and interests shared.

So far, the weather is influencing us slightly and we have started to make a ‘cold’ board.  We will be using this theme to learn about the differences between animals that live in cold or warm climates as well as things that can be built with snow and ice.

Following my exciting holiday in the snow (Which I’ll try not to talk about too much!), construction of an igloo has already begun.  We will be making igloos with real ice and using chalks we will be creating our own Northern lights.

Who knows what the weather will bring during this term.  We all hope and wish for some snow!

CHINESE NEW YEAR

Chinese New Year will be celebrated at Pre-School during the week beginning Monday 23rd January.  This year is the ‘Year of the Rooster’.

We will have Chinese snacks, Little Chefs will make celebratory food and we will use our creative skills to make a collage display and have a go at writing Chinese letters.

We also welcome Hal’s nanny, Jo, to sing with us in Chinese and teach us some words and phrases.

 ABSENCES

If your child is going to be absent from their session please telephone Pre-School to advise us of the absence.

Our sessions are filling fast and we may be able to offer the space to someone in need.

LATE COLLECTION OF CHILDREN

We are more than happy to accommodate extra sessions upon request as long as we have the spaces available and these extra minutes/hours are charged accordingly.  Please be aware that a late collection of children also carries a charge of £1.25 for each 15 minutes that they remain in our care. Payment is required at the time of collection.

It can be most embarrassing for us to keep having to ask for money and we understand that it is the same for you!  Please help us avoid this by paying promptly.  Thank you.

LITTLE CHEFS

The following children will be cooking on Tuesday 10th January:

WILLIAM   MAISIE   DEXTER   SEBBY   HAL  GABEY  TED

Next week the Little Chefs will be making individual pizzas.

These are great fun to make and introduce the children to a range of skills including chopping, grating, peeling.

Please bring an amount of cheese to cover a muffin-sized pizza and a topping of choice.

Please remember a container to take your pizza home in.

BLUE BOOK FOLDERS

We have a fantastic selection of books; fiction and non-fiction that we enjoy sharing with the children.  Each child has received a blue book folder.  Please use these to borrow one book at a time from Pre-School and then return it to exchange for another.

BILL PAYMENTS

Please kindly put the surname as a reference when paying by bank transfer.  This is the most popular method of payment, which is great, but we need to know who the payment is from!

On the bottom of your bill is a return slip.  Please give this to Liz so that we are aware the payment has been made.  Thank you.

Thank you for your ongoing support.  We always appreciate your comments and ideas.

We are all looking forward to the Sping term; we hope you are too.

Kind regards,

Nina, Liz, Kelly and Harriet.

First day of new term.  NO INSET DAY FOR PRE-SCHOOL.

We have been busy this week……………….

This week we have been busy making lanterns and decorating Rangoli patterns in celebration of the Hindu Festival of Light; Diwali.

This has enabled us to continue practicing our cutting skills and to enjoy using the creative area.  We all have our favourite toys, games and areas that we like to spend time with but it is important that we direct the children to try a variety of activities which they may not necessarily choose to do.  Following the making of lanterns and patterns we have noticed that many of the boys have ventured freely into the creative area and produced some exciting and creative works of art.  The pride which they feel from drawing pictures, painting and being creative with art materials is so wonderful to see.  This naturally progresses to the creation of numbers and letters, writing and reading.

The activity of using our fingers to write letters in the sand has been popular this week.  We have found initial letters of our own names and of our friends as well as matching letter sounds to items we can find around the room. We have also enjoyed working as a group to complete large floor puzzles and to use the big boxes to build and explore.

We have enjoyed exercises during P.E, on Thursday Kelly continued to practise French with the children, we have cooked, painted, cut, built, read, listened, danced, explored, laughed, chatted and so much more this week.  Every week the children continue to amaze and delight!

We are now well in to the school year and have noticed that the children are working so well together as a group.  This takes time to achieve at the beginning of each school year.  When the school leavers have moved on, the dynamics change and each child has to find their place within the group.  During this week we have all noticed a change and an acceptance of each other.  The conversations the children have,  show that they are genuinely interested in each other, they are showing pride and respect for their own and each other’s interests and are making firm friends.

Well done everyone!

WELCOME….

We would like to welcome Harriet Waggett – Mummy of former Checkendon Pre-School friend, Sam.

Harriet is helping Liz and Nina every Wednesday and is also with us three more times during the week to ensure smooth running of our ship!

It is lovely to have you with us Harriet.

Thank you to our committee members who have stepped in during the term to help us – you have given us your spare, child-free time and we really do appreciate your help.

LITTLE CHEFS

Next week’s chefs are:

ERIC      THOMAS       CLIO   JUDE

AUSTIN EDWARDS    AVA    JACOB

You will be making banana cakes.  Please bring a suitable container in which to take them home safely.

Snack

As you may know, we have joined the Fareshare scheme in conjunction with the Henley branch of Tesco.

This means that we collect a weekly donation of bakery, chilled and fresh goods from Tesco for the children to consume throughout the week.

Due to the wonderful amount and variety that we do collect, at this present time we would like you to lessen your contributions to the snack bowl.  We are so lucky to receive all the food items from Tesco and we hope that this may continue for a long time but it does mean that we have so much food!!

Thank you for your contributions to the snack bowl.  Your help has always been appreciated by us all.

We are in the news….

Do pick up a copy of this week’s Henley Standard – we are in the news!

On the gallery page there is a photograph and an editorial of us receiving our ‘Happy, Healthy Harvest’ window competition prize from the Tesco representative.

Christmas

Next week we will venture into the realms of Christmas with the children.  If there is anything that you would like us to include in our celebrations, or not, please let us know.

We have five weeks in which to make decorations, build festive wall displays, sing songs, practise Nativity and so much more.  But please note that we build up as the weeks go by – we will not be sending the children home next week counting down the sleeps!

We are all looking forward to the Nativity on Friday the 9th December.  A casting session has taken place!  Next week we will try out the children in their parts which may lead to a few changes so in next week’s newsletter we will inform you of the part that your child will take in the Nativity followed by any costume requirements.

Nativity will be performed by the children who are moving on to Primary School in 2017. We are looking forward to painting scenery this year – our plan is to build Bethlehem using the Tesco boxes and fairy lights!  It is a very exciting time and we are looking forward to this very important event.

As usual, you are all more than welcome to come along and watch the performance.  Please do bring family along with you – the more the merrier.  I think our Nativities have gained a bit of a reputation so it is definitely a date for your diaries!

Our Pre-School committee members will be selling warm drinks and mince pies before the show begins so do bring some pennies along to support our fundraising efforts.

The Christmas Party and lunch is for ALL the children in attendance at Checkendon Pre-School.

This is the best chance to put on party clothes and celebrate the festive season in style! We are so excited to welcome Jester Giggles this year as well as Father Christmas, followed by a delicious Christmas Dinner.

CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY

Friday 16th December is “National Christmas Jumper Day.”  If you would like to send your child to Pre-School wearing a Christmas jumper, please do!  This doesn’t have to be on one day – Christmas jumpers are fun to wear throughout December!  Kelly has a collection of them at home so she will be joining in with the jumper fun!!

Christmas Jumper Day is an official fundraising day for Save The Children Charity – a fantastic reason to wear a Christmas Jumper at any time.

Fundraising

Halloween Week was a huge success, followed by our stall of games at the Primary School Firework Night.

From the sale of cakes which you all generously baked, the cake competition, face painting and the firework stall you raised a total of £260 in one week!  Thank you so much everyone.

The children had so much fun, dressed up, danced, played spooky games and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

If you buy online there is an easy way to support your preschool by going to easyfundraising.org.uk any small amount really helps.

Spare Clothes

Please ensure that your child has at least one whole outfit of spare clothes in the bag that Checkendon Pre-School has provided.  We use our own bags to free up some space in the cloakroom area which we know is rather limited.

We have been busy this week…………….

There has been a feeling of spookiness this week at Checkendon Pre-School CIO.  We have thoroughly enjoyed flying on our broomsticks, making magic spells using our glittery wands, painting our faces, singing spooky songs, dancing to Halloween music and much more.

Some of the children dressed up this week – well done for the creative costumes that we have seen.

Many of you carved some fantastic pumpkins – the darker afternoons have been perfect for lighting candles inside to make us feel even spookier!

The pumpkin carving competition has been won by…..Jacob Viney (1st Place and winner of a ride-on vehicle) and Austin Edwards (2nd Place and winner of a bag of ball-pool balls!)

Well done both of you – we all loved your decorations.

Thank you and well done to all those who brought their carved pumpkins to Pre-School.  As the afternoon sun lessened we lit them all and they did look magical.

Next week we will be discovering the Hindu Festival of Light – Diwali.  We will be lighting Pre-School with twinkly lights, making lanterns and singing songs about candles and stars.

A special pattern called a Rangoli is very pretty and we will use paints and glitter to create some of these.  They are a traditional symbol of the Diwali festival.

LITTLE CHEFS

Little Chefs will be making banana bread next week.  The Little Chefs will be:

WILLIAM          GABRIEL

MAISIE              HAL

DEXTER             SEBBY

Please remember a container to take home your cooking.

Thank you.

The following week will be the second group of children making Banana Bread.  This will be followed with Christmas recipes then until the end of term……

Following our Diwali week we will be gently introducing Christmas to Pre-School.

We have many glittery, creative, festive activities planned and there is so much to look forward to during this term.

We will be singing, dancing, making and creating.  This includes Nativity which is always an experience!  We also have a party to look forward to – thank you for the contributions of £5.00 towards the party which have already started coming in. We are delighted that Jester Giggles is joining us at 9.30am on Wednesday 14th December along with Father Christmas and a delicious Christmas lunch.

The party will begin at 9.30 and end at 12.30   Please ensure that children are here at 9.15 if they do not normally attend the session.

CHRISTMAS DINNER SHOPPING

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are spending our winning voucher from the Harvest Window Display Competition, on the Christmas lunch.

If you would like to join me on SUNDAY 11 December at 2.30pm we will shop together for all the ingredients – including Christmas Crackers!!

We will meet at Henley-on-Thames Tesco to take the children shopping.  If you would like to come along please let me know.

This will be a lovely experience for us and a great way to use the voucher that Tesco presented us with.  I imagine there may be festive treats along the way to make our shopping trip a bit more fun than usual!!

Vicki Thomas has so kindly offered to cook the dinner for us whilst the children enjoy their party.  Thank you so much Vicki – we are all looking forward to our special day.

TABLES AND CHAIRS

We are often asked if our children’s tables and chairs are available to use for parties.

We have decided that we are happy to hire out the blue tables and red chairs for parties held either in or out of the village hall.

There are 5 blue tables and 30 chairs.  If you are hosting an event for children and would like to borrow either some or all of them we ask for £5.00 per table and 50p per chair.

All we ask is that the tables and chairs are collected and returned in a clean condition and in time for us to use at Pre-School!

Please note that any damages will need to be paid for or the item of furniture replaced.

Just ask us if you would like them.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Remember if you would like Charlotte Snowden to take gorgeous photos of your child next week please let us know by signing the timesheet in the entrance hallway.

There is no obligation to purchase photos but she will only take pics of the children on the sheet.

We are happy to change children in to smart clothes if you wish and we will ensure that they are clean and presentable.

A.G.M.

Our A.G.M is being held here in the village hall on Tuesday of next week at 7.45pm.

As you may be aware Checkendon Pre-School CIO is run by a Committee of Parents.  Without a committee we cannot operate so your support is vital.  We welcome any ideas and suggestions from you and if you would like to join us to meet our committee then Tuesday’s A.G.M is the ideal time.

You will find news from our Chairperson, Hannah, at the end of my weekly newsletter.

Hannah, was delighted to meet you at the Coffee Morning as were Heidi, Sue, Vicki and Charlotte – our committee members.

Wishing you all an exciting Bonfire Night weekend and we will see you next week.

Kind regards, Nina, Liz and Kelly.

We have veered away from our Harvest theme this week and begun making decorations for our Halloween week.

This is an excellent time to really practise and focus on our cutting skills.  We have enjoyed making spiders, snakes, pumpkins and bats – all cut out by the children themselves.  These colourful decorations will transform Pre-School in readiness for our Halloween week – but not in a scary way.

We DO NOT encourage the children to scare each other, nor do we scare them. We have a bit of fun with Halloween by dressing up in ANY costumes/outfits, making decorations brightly coloured and decorative and making magic wands out of sticks decorated with glitter!  We will have some music and movement sessions, face painting (with a £1.00 fundraising charge) and we will continue to be creative with our Halloween arty activities.

Each Transformer has been given a special book into which some, not all, of their work will be entered.  This book will stay at Pre-School for use each week and may be taken home as part of their developmental records when they move on to Primary School.

We have continued to focus this week on individual learning and development.  Next term we will be focusing on working together as a small group, encouraging each other, listening to each other’s ideas and suggestions and using these social skills in our everyday routine.

This will help the children with their Nativity practice which will begin early next term.  We will be singing together, learning some words to say and working together to produce another Nativity.

Alongside this our Christmas activities will include learning our numbers, colours, shapes and letters and activities will be provided to enable pattern making, sorting, matching the same sounds and so much more.

Pre-School will be transformed again next term as we celebrate Christmas.  We will inform you of activities and apologise in advance for the layer of glitter which will probably cover everyone and everything very soon!!

We will keep you informed of your child’s progress.

## CONGRATULATIONS  ##

We are very proud to announce that Checkendon Pre-School won 1st prize in the Tesco ‘Happy, Healthy Harvest’ window display competition.

Our bright, colourful display fills a window in the Henley-on-Thames branch of Tesco.

A representative from Tesco joined us on Thursday morning to present us with our prize and a certificate.

Our prize is a £25 Tesco voucher.  We have decided to spend this on the Christmas lunch.  To include the children in the spending of the voucher I would like to ask any of you to join me on a food shopping trip!  It would be lovely for the children to choose the vegetables and follow the shopping list as this would link the whole process of making the poster for the window display, winning and using the prize.

I do not have a date confirmed yet, but it will be during December. My plan is to meet anyone who wishes to join me at the Henley branch of Tesco (parent plus child!) and then we will go shopping!  The Tesco representative Ali Simmons hopes to join us for a fabulous photo opportunity and a learning experience for the children.

Please let me know if you would like to join me on what will be quite an experience!!

We are sending our photo and editorial to The Henley Standard so keep an eye out!  We have already been featured in the online newspaper – The Henley Herald.

Well done everyone!

LITTLE CHEFS

This week was ‘Bread Week and what a delicious bread rolls all the Little Chefs made.

Liz and Vicki are in the process of planning the Little Chef Menus for next term.  There will be no Little Chefs on Tuesday 1st November.

All of the children attending on a Tuesday morning will be Little Chefs and in two small groups will continue to work with Liz and Vicki to produced delicious bakes.

PHOTOGRAPHS WITH CHARLOTTE SNOWDEN

During November we will welcome Charlotte Snowden here for two days to take photographic portraits of the children.  We will put up a time-slot notice nearer the time so that if you do not attend Pre-School on the days that she is here, your child may still be photographed.  The dates that she will be here are at the top of this letter.

You are more than welcome to bring siblings along and we are happy to change children into smart clothes for their shoot.

Photos are available to purchase in a variety of sizes and packs which Charlotte aims to be ready in plenty of time for Christmas.

Charlotte Snowden lives and works in Checkendon.  She is a renowned photographer and has won many prestigious awards.  Her children attended Checkendon Pre-School and she has kindly taken photos for us for many years.

You can visit her website www.charlottesnowdenphotography.co.uk to see her work.

A SIGNING UP SHEET FOR YOU TO CHOOSE YOUR PREFERRED TIME SLOT WILL BE IN THE ENTRANCE HALL FROM MONDAY 31ST OCTOBER.  PLEASE SIGN UP IF YOU WISH TO HAVE YOUR CHILD/SIBLINGS PHOTO TAKEN.

THERE IS NO OBLIGATION TO PURCHASE THE PHOTOS BUT WE WILL NOT TAKE A PHOTO IF YOU ARE NOT ON THE SIGNING UP SHEET.

HALLOWEEN FUNDRAISING WEEK

During the week beginning 31st October we will be holding some mini fundraisers to raise some pennies.

We will be asking you to enter some competitions which will carry a nominal entry fee and to contribute cakes to a cake sale.

We would like the children to enjoy dressing up in costumes throughout the week and we will all be joining in with some fun, exciting, spooky activities.

Halloween is never scary at Pre-School – but a bit of spooky fun makes us giggle!  We will discover spooky poems and songs, make some magic spells, paint spooky paintings and much more.

Our coffee morning takes place on the Tuesday morning at 9.00-10.30am.

We hope that many of you are able to join us for a relaxed morning of chatting and meeting new families and friends.

We are holding a cake sale for the children of Pre-School and Primary School on THURSDAY 3rd NOVEMBER.

Just a reminder that all the cakes we sell will raise funds for Pre-School so if you are able to bake for us we would be most grateful.

If you are able to help man the stall on the day at 3.00pm please let us know.  Thank you.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS

Christmas comes early at Pre-School!  We have arranged the dates for our celebrations which are as follows:

Nativity – FRIDAY 09 DECEMBER.

The Nativity will be performed this year ONLY BY THE CHILDREN WHO ARE MOVING ON TO SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER 2017.

We would like to invite ALL the children to join us on WEDNESDAY 14TH DECEMBER for a festive celebration which will include a traditional home-cooked Christmas lunch, a visit from Father Christmas and an entertainer who will make us all giggle!

We do not ask for help – just bring your child along for a fabulous Christmas party and we will do the rest!

We would like to ask for a voluntary contribution towards the entertainer from our Pre-School families.  An entertainer provides such a wonderful, comical, magical hour of fun and laughter for the children but they do come at a cost.  For us to provide this for the children this year, we would like to request a £5.00 contribution per child.

We will ensure that the children have a fabulous festive celebration with us.

We hope that all of the children will join us for this really lovely festive treat.

We will send home a contribution request form shortly but thank you in advance for your understanding.

Thank you to those who have contributed their £5.00 already.

I can now confirm the party time:

JESTER GIGGLES WILL START OUR MORNING OF FUN AT 9.30AM – if you do not attend the session please ensure that your child is here at 9.15am.

We will follow Jester with some party games, a visit from Father Christmas (every child will receive a gift) and a traditional Christmas lunch.

Please collect your child at 12.30pm – unless you attend a Wednesday afternoon session which continues as normal.

We do have some exciting plans for Autumn and Winter at Pre-School.  We will keep you updated via this weekly newsletter.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Nina, Liz, Kelly.

We have been busy this week……..

We have been busy this week celebrating Harvest.  We have thoroughly enjoyed using vegetables and fruit to produce colourful paintings this week.  We have made a wonderful, huge display to celebrate the “Happy, Healthy Harvest”.

This is in conjunction with the supermarket Tesco in Henley-on-Thames.

Each week Tesco donate surplus food items to Checkendon Pre-School CIO which would otherwise go to waste.  We can accept these donations thanks to the Fareshare Community Food Scheme set up for local charities.

We use the bread, fruit and vegetables to help provide a wider choice for the children at breakfast and snack times.

Do visit Tesco in Henley so that the children can show you their handiwork.  It’s a competition so you never know………we’re not even sure what the prizes are!!  Hopefully it will be a nice surprise!

Little chefs

This week was the second round of apple and sultana cakes – the children do nearly all of the work themselves with fantastic, delicious results.

Next week is vegetable soup week!  Yum!  Please bring one vegetable that your child would like to put into their soup as well as a suitable container to take it home in.

Next week’s chefs are:  Dexter, Maisie, Sebby, William you need your vegetable next week.

The following week our soup chefs will be:  Jude, Austin, Ava, Clio, Eric – so you need your vegetable the following week.

We’ve made jigsaw puzzles with photocopies of t-shirts, discovered new paths in the woods, used the equipment during P.E, learned the tractor song for harvest, enjoyed watercolour painting and vegetable printing, .

COFFEE MORNING AND CAKE SALE

On TUESDAY 1ST NOVEMBER you are all invited to a ‘Welcome Coffee Morning’ at Checkendon Pre-School.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new children and families to Pre-School in a relaxed and enjoyable fashion.

There will be yummy cakes to eat and plenty of new friends to make.

Do come along at 9.00am – 10.00am for our coffee morning during which there will be a cake sale to raise funds for Pre-School.

More information will follow but we all hope that many of you will be able to join us.

Thank you for your continuing support of Checkendon Pre-School CIO.  The weeks are flying by and I am happy to report that the children are forming a super group, making friends and really understanding the routine and our funny little ways of doing things here!

We are looking forward to the coming months with this really happy group.

Committee news

What a successful year our ladies and the preschool have had. We would like to thank them for the nurturing environment that they create enabling our children to learn, grow and thrive.

As the transformers head off to pastures new the committee would like to thank every parent for supporting our preschool either by providing snacks, or cake or volunteering at the run. Everything you have done has been valuable to our children and their future.

Our success in the run has meant that we have raised over £700 to be spent on new equipment for the school – watch this space. The ladies are generating their extensive shopping list as we speak.

Happy holidays and looking forward to seeing you all next year

Best wishes,

The Checkendon Pre-School CIO Committee.
